All is not lost if you obtained your MSN in a specialty you no longer want to practice in. Although NPs can find work in a variety settings and concentrations, you may still find yourself looking for a change greater than your current specialty will take you. If you want to practice in an area significantly different than your current specialization (such as going from Adult to Neonatal), or perhaps you may want to add another specialty certification to enhance your current practice (such as adding Gerontology to Adult), you may want to obtain a post-master’s certificate. These programs are generally shorter than getting your first specialty degree, although to meet the requirements to sit for the national certification exam the program may be not be significantly shorter, particularly for those crossing a big gap in specialty area.
