National board certification is as an Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or Family Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from American Nurses’ Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Family PMHNPs provide a full range of psychiatric services to adults, children, adolescents and their families, such as differential diagnosis and management of psychiatric & mental health disorders, medication management, primary mental health care services across the lifespan, psychodynamic therapy, psychotherapeutic interventions, and management of mental health issues within families and complex systems. Additionally, they may choose to focus their practice on child and adolescent, adult, or older adult populations. The Adult PMHNPs are trained to work specifically with adult populations. Work settings may include community mental health centers, child and adolescent hospitals, or clinics.
